Core programme: A Fundamental Drawing & Painting Course
The KA Fine Art Academy core studies programme is divided into two segments: Drawing & Painting. The first half of the programme is dedicated to Drawing, while the second half to Painting. The drawing programme itself can also be offered as a potential standalone programme both in full and part-time options. Continuing study onto the painting programme is dependent on successful completion of the drawing programme. Our studio offers a constructive, organised environment, with direct guidance from the studio’s principal artists. Our core programme is dedicated to craftsmanship and the skilful use of materials and classical (museum quality) techniques. This helps to ensure a deep understanding of the structure and discipline required to practice fine art in a traditional sense. Although no prior art training is required to apply, we do think applicants should be able to show serious work ethic (through their online application and subsequent interview) and sincere desire to learn contemporary realist drawing and painting.
Drawing programme:
Full-time / Part-time study at KAFA Academy begins with our drawing programme. The drawing programme duration is one to two years and will start students beginning with Geometrical still life, Block-in drawings of the plaster casts and Master copies before rendering them to an exact likeness with a full range of tone. Emphasis is placed on the handling of the materials. These exercises gradually increase in their difficulty to challenge the refined student’s skills over the time. Casts are drawn to the scale of life using the sight size method. Students work from a number of casts in charcoal each semester to gain the ability of understanding the proportions accurately and model the subtle light and shade present in the cast. At the end of the year, students are introduced to portrait drawing with pencil and charcoal using a master copy prints and live model. This drawing programme will provide students with skills they will rely on for the rest of their career, and make up the foundation for KA Fine Art Painting programme.
Painting programme:
Following the drawing programme, students can continue with the painting programme. When the requisite level of draftsmanship has been attained, second and third-year students concentrate on portrait and figure drawing with advanced masterclass artistic anatomy. Students are taught the Preparation of canvas and grounds, Handling of oil paints, the making and use of the medium based on the analysis of historical accounts. Students will start with a thorough introduction to the theory of tonal value. Painting the casts 'monochrome' (en grisaille) will be followed by portrait and figure painting. After a full year’s immersion in oil painting from life, the student will emerge with the confidence and experience to handle the paint in a multitude of ways: broad loose alla prima or tighter form-oriented handling with an emphasis on compositional strategies.
